Why do we need to remind ourselves about things that we consider base nature; common sense; intuitive and important to us?
Because it is frighteningly easy to forget.
In times of contentment, we forget how fragile these moments are– how they will not be here forever. We forget what it takes to be resilient and to endure.
In times of struggle, we forget what it is like to feel joy, how to be kind to ourselves and to one another. We forget that in order to overcome struggle, we need to be steadfast against strife, jealousy, and our own egos.
I feel with increasing urgency to remember and to remind people of these things through my work. My practice has always been rooted in memory and remembering, but more than ever, it seems there is a need to trace back the roots of our human experience, of what is good and true, and what is worth standing up for. And to not forget.
My papier-mache-clay sculptures represent our selves, but are also reminders (to myself) of guiding principles in my life. I do this by manipulating the material with layers, using humour, colour, text and symbols to confront things that are often uncomfortable.
